Sustainability commitment
A Sustainability Commitment is a formal statement published in an organisation's key documents or on its website to clearly state which environmental, social, and governance principles it is committed to upholding and its expectations of employees, suppliers, business partners, and possibly even customers to uphold these principles. There is no one-size-fits-all template for Sustainability Commitments. They should be tailored to the nature, size, sector, maturity, and operating context of the organisation. They can be embedded in a formal environmental and social management system (ESMS) or they can be the simple anchor document for an organisation to gradually build up its various supporting policies and procedures. A key characteristic is that the commitment is a formal document approved by senior management and possibly the Board, and which is shared with staff through communications and training. Ideally, communications and contracts with suppliers and business partners should also reference the commitment.
