Code of conduct for security personnel
Codes of conduct for security personnel describe what is considered ethical behaviour of security personnel, which include security guards hired to protect staff, assets, or premises of the organisation. The aim is to provide security services in a responsible manner that respects the rule of law and human rights, including, but not limited to, appropriate use of force, use of firearms, overstepping authority, acceptance of gratuities, and dealing with bribes. Organisations may employ their own security staff, in which case they can set out clear rules in the employment contract that cover respect for human rights, ethical behaviour, and related considerations. Where security services are contracted to an outside firm, the organisation should ask the service provider to share its code of conduct and training requirements, and ideally embed ethical requirements and recourse for breaches in the service contract.
